SNORING

SNORING

Sleep apnea and snoring are sleep-related issues, but they’re different. Sleep apnea happens when you stop breathing for short periods during sleep, often due to blocked airways or problems with your brain’s signals. It can lead to serious health problems. Snoring, on the other hand, is noisy breathing during sleep because of relaxed throat tissues or other factors. While snoring is common and usually harmless, it can sometimes be a sign of sleep apnea. If you or someone you know has symptoms like loud snoring, gasping for breath during sleep, or feeling very tired during the day, it’s a good idea to see a doctor to find out if there’s an underlying issue that needs attention.

  • Polysomnography (Sleep Study): The most common and definitive way to diagnose sleep apnea is through a sleep study, known as polysomnography. This study is typically done in a sleep center or sometimes at home with portable equipment. During a polysomnography, various body functions are monitored while you sleep, including:
  • Breathing Patterns: This measures the number of apneas (complete cessation of breathing) and hypopneas (partial obstruction of breathing) per hour to determine the severity of sleep apnea.
  • Oxygen Levels: Oxygen saturation in the blood is monitored to identify drops in oxygen during apnea events.
  • Brain Activity (EEG): Electroencephalogram (EEG) electrodes measure brain activity to identify sleep stages.
  • Eye Movements (EOG): Electrooculography (EOG) tracks eye movements to determine sleep stages.
  • Home Sleep Apnea Testing: In some cases, healthcare providers may recommend home sleep apnea testing (HSAT) for individuals with suspected mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea. HSAT typically involves wearing simplified monitoring equipment while sleeping in the comfort of your own home.
  • DISE: A diagnostic test to do endoscopy while the patient is made to sleep artificially by a trained anaesthtic. This way the site and severity of obstruction or snoring is localised and treatment is planned accordingly.
